AC Car Group
Surrey England
makers of the most famous Hairy chested sports car ever,
Established 1901 in a South London workshop
During the Great War AC produced shells and fuses as well as some cars, and by 1919 were ready to start car production again. Models were now produced with 10 and 12 hp engines and eventually led to the six-cylinder 16 hp model. AC listed the 16 hp engine until the 1960's
In February 1921 SF Edge joined AC as a director but friction between himself and John Weller and John Portwine caused the latter two to resign. SF Edge became Chairman and Managing Director and changed the name of the company to A.C. Cars Ltd.
A car, designed in 1926 by John Weller, became the first British car to win the Monte Carlo rally.
During 1929 AC went into voluntary liquidation and was bought by William and Charles Hurlock. AC reappeared in 1933 and started to make conventional well-built sports cars.
In 1953 the AC Ace sports model marked a change in the company's designs. John Weller's engine was fitted to a chassis designed by John Tojeiro and was to become the Ace. Prototypes were raced successfully
As an alternative, the Bristol engine was available in the Ace and the Aceca from 1956. In 1963 an AC Cobra was the first British finisher at Le Mans.
Small low priced cars were made by AC during the 1950's and included 4,000 Petite's, a three-wheel car similar in appearance to the Reliant, and the pale blue single seat invalid carriage
