wails Blair, OPEC must increase production chirp the Chancellor and the Scottish Secretary.
Who do they think they are kidding? how stupid do they think we all are?
This morning in an area devoid of Black Gold , I headed for new labours much vaunted public transport. What do I find when I get to the Utopian Panacea for all transport problems. A queue, and 200yard queue just to get a ticket. Having got a ticket the Trams too crowded to get on, so I get the next one. An hour late I arrive at work and contemplate where to vent my anger.
I look around and I see a diverse group of people who are involved in the current fiasco and to each of them I will apportion what I think is there appropriate amount of blame.
Joe Public.
Yes us we have to take a little of the blame, panic buying has only made the situation spiral quicker, how many of us have cars sat at home with full tanks just in case, we must take a small part of the blame for that alone. But we must take a larger share of the blame for our sheepish behaviour over the past few years when we have lamely accepted ever increasing prices without even raising an eyebrow, we have made ourselves an easy target and source of revenue, and our good natured obedience has been exploited to the full by greedy politicians. Mea Culpa.
Belligerent Radical Middle England Activists.
The Pickets. Are they to blame, not really there are just expressing there right to free speech, expressing their disgust to a deaf leadership which has blatantly ignored them and swept their views under the carpet. Freedom of speech and expression remains a British right and as long as they do it peacefully it should remain so.
OPEC
They must increase production the government bleats. But are they really being greedy. About 20p a litre is accounted for by buying the raw material, processing, delivery, staff , profits etc the Oil producing nations cut of your 80p a litre fuel is relatively small and hence they have only a small effect on the pump price, a close on doubling of world oil prices has pushed prices up only by the amount your average budget shoves it up by yearly.
The Oil Companies
The government has already pointed it finger at the likes of BP and Shell etc and demanded that they demand that the police take action to clear the path for their drivers. So far the oil companies have tactfully declined the offer preferring instead to implicitly support the protest, its probably hurting their short term figures, but they are taking a long term view , and they know the public have no real axe to grind with them at the moment. As yet they have not forced their drivers over Picket lines and I suspect implicit support of the public majority view will gain them lots of respect and admiration in the long term.
The Government
Elected by the people for the people but as usual, pay no attention to the people. They have hidden real debate behind a welter of subterfuge. They blame everyone and everything else whilst raking in your cash and stashing in its pre-election bribe fund.
They spend no money on roads but blame motorists for causing traffic jams.
They do nothing to improve public transport but blame the motorist for not using it.
They take 80% of the price of fuel and call other bodies greedy.
But never mind phony Tony is a man of his word, and if he says public protest will not change government policy, then he must be right.
If Tony says protest will have no effect, then he must be right.
If Tony says all the money goes to our wonderful???? national health service??? he must be right.
Is this the same Blair who marched with CND, is this the same Blair who demanded the Abolition of Poll Tax
Strange that demonstrating and voicing opposition is fine unless, its him and his government your opposing.
And of course every penny the public is relived of goes direct to good causes like
The DOME
The dome has cost us 1 billion pounds, that's about the same a 2p per litre of tax for a year, when they say fuel tax funds the NHS ask what funds DOME.
And if Tony says that we must raise prices to penal levels and cut Oil consumption to save the planet and conserve stocks he must be right, unless of course he calls for OPEC to increase oil production to save his government.
Twelve months back New Labour established a study group to see how far they could tax the motorist without suffering a backlash, they obviously didnt get it quite right as the backlash is here, and they where unprepared for it, question is how much further did they think they could go before it started to hurt them.
Put the blame where you will the choice is yours, do you want a fair deal on fuel or do you want to pay more than £10 a gallon in six years time. When you come to tick the box next time, remember what its going to cost you.
