The front seat belts are now very much inertia operated. This
type of belt gives the driver the ability to move around without too much
restriction.
In the event of an impact the inertia seat belt is designed to grip the belt and
not allow the occupant to travel forward any more than they already are.
A seat belt pre tensioner is a device which physically explodes on impact similar to an air bag.
When the tensioner is activated it pulls the tension onto the seat belt.
In taking up the slack it enhances the grip on the occupant which may only be a
couple of inches in the belt but may make the difference between a bruised head
or a hole in it.
A superior safety feature which is very much underestimated.
