The first external temperature gauges were quite crude.
They were the after market device which self adhered to your drivers external
rear view mirror and changed colour according to the temperature and sometimes
(not intended) the wind chill factor.
Later systems are much more accurate and generally consist of an electronic thermometer usually in a draft free external area on the car exterior.

The thermometer supplies the car with the data which is generally visible via a display in the cars interior.
For safety some cars have a warning device which when the temperature approaches zero degrees Celsius, The car will alert the driver to the low temperature and possible black ice.
