If you suffer from hey-fever and or allergies what a luxury the added fitment of a pollen filter can make.
The pollen filter itself is basically an air filter element similar to the normal engine air filter.
It is generally fitted in the car bulkhead area before the cars ventilation fan.
Below is an Audi pollen filter which is behind the cars bulkhead plastic guard.

What it does is basically filter dust, pollen or any other particles before they enter your cars interior.
They are not perfect but do assist in keeping unwanted interior contamination.
The pollen filter does not filter smells this is done by re-circulating the cars air and not ventilating through the pollen filter from exterior at all.
The pollen filter should be changed at regular intervals this is normally at the cars normal servicing schedule.
Today's pollen filters are much greater in size than the early types introduced on the late eighties and are far more efficient in their job.

The above pollen filter is quite tiny being only about ten Centimeters in diameter.
