Rear seatbelts are now mandatory in the UK since August 1996 D reg.
Normally cars are only fitted with two tree point seat belts and one middle lap belt.
Back in the late eighties Volvo were one of the first manufacturers to fit the middle seat with a three point belt.
Modern cars are now being fitted with this type of belt which is proving to save many lives.
The traditional lap belt was injuring many of it's occupants which were generally children and therefore manufacturers are now fitting the third belt as standard unfortunately this is only on there larger cars.
Small hatchbacks are not usually fitted with this device.
This feature is becoming more desired by parents who have children and therefore cars fitted with it can be more desirable.
